Toward a Theology of Work
Re-reading Marie-Dominique Chenu Today
Abstract
Based on Marie-Dominique Chenu’s publications on a theology of work and his contribution to the journal Lumière et vie, this article examines the conditions that might make a similar approach possible today, and invites us to sketch out its contours. More than any other theological project, a theology of work must be rooted in a reading of the signs of the times, a difficult reading that questions the conditions under which human activity is carried out, the modes of sociability that accompany it, and its impact on nature. Climate and environmental issues call for a reflection on work as care – care for each individual, for society and for nature – and for us to continue to engage in an ecclesial process of shared social discernment. In this respect, the journal Lumière et vie appears as a laboratory, which found an echo in the approaches of Catholic Action movements. With fewer resources, but greater facilities for engaging in a global conversation, it seems useful to continue in this direction, in order to sustain hope for our common world.
