Philosophy in the Hollow of Theology
Le Nouvel Être by Paul Tillich
Abstract
This article examines the philosophical concerns in Paul Tillich’s theological thought, with a focus on a collection of sermons addressed to a university audience, titled Le Nouvel Être, first published in 1955, available since 2022 in a new translation by theologian André Gounelle, in 2022 by Labor et Fides. The article establishes four areas of philosophical resonance within Tillich’s meditation on the New Reality brought by Christ. Tillich’s treatment of the themes of truth and wisdom, on the one hand, shows an explicit relationship with philosophy; on the other hand, Tillich’s articulation of love and justice and his conception of certainty contain underlying philosophical implications. These four reference points outline a dialogue between philosophy and theology, with particular consideration given to Tillich’s own critical recognition of philosophy. Additionally, attention is placed upon Tillich’s theological reflection on the evangelical message of the Nouvel Être which arose with Christ. This reflection unfolds a conceptuality which is of interest to the history of philosophy.
