From the Word to the Image, and Back

A Theoretical and Contemplative Approach, with a Sample of Historical Problems

François Bœspflug

Abstract

What is the (reciprocal and complex) relation between the world of images and the world of language, two worlds that are essential to the humanity of the human, two immense and creative worlds that are meant to fruitfully meet and engage one another, even as the risk of a domination or subjugation of one by the other is constant? This is the question raised here by a theologian and scholar with a long lasting interest in images. This meditation then turns to certain problems which these two worlds have had to face in the Christian world yesterday and today, such as the instrumentalizing of images for the sake of preaching or catechesis, or, conversely, the worshipping of certain works of art. The article concludes with some comments on certain contemporary productions and artistic trends through which Christian art is searching for its own future.
