Dutch Faith and Flemish Faith?

The Limits of an Artistic and Confessional Geography during the 17th Century

Jan Blanc Léonie Marquaille

Abstract

Recent research on the artistic and confessional geography of the Northern and Southern Netherlands has not only provided a more accurate picture of the relationship between 17th c. Dutch artists (and their clients) and faith (or religion). It has also helped dispel some of the commonplaces that have been in use since the 19th c. and that are still sometimes found in scholarship. In this article we critically examine some of these commonplaces.
