Being a Top Sportswoman, Developing an “Unusual” Body Shape and “Remaining a Woman”?
An Essay on the Foundations of a Socially Unthinkable Equation
Abstract
Can a woman simultaneously be a top-level sportswoman and exhibit a colossal morphology? It has to be said that athletes who combine these two properties are not only extremely rare (or invisible), but also very often disparaged. They are exposed to a series of trials for virilisation (accusations of no longer being a “real woman”) and probity (suspicion of doping). We have identified the reasons behind society’s inability to generate, design and promote female competitors of “out of the ordinary” stature. We have identified socially effective barriers to sexual selection, as well as media, institutional and cognitive barriers. Ultimately, it is a whole system of proscriptions and sanctions, leading to the reinforcement of gendered bi-categorisation, that needs to be revealed insofar as it acts as a “glass ceiling,” confining sportswomen to moderation and trivialisation. It’s no longer acceptable, particularly in the field of anatomy, for the extraordinary and the extreme to remain the exclusive privilege of men.
