The Ideological Roots of the Séminaire Vaudois de Culture Théologique
Abstract
In order to clarify the theological heritage in which the Séminaire de culture théologique was inscribed by its founders, we must examine how the “free churchers” (the libristes) progressively shaped their theological teaching over the years at their Faculty in Lausanne, founded in 1847. It strengthened laypeoples’s training by implementing a pedagogy of conviction rooted in the ‘awakened’ theology propagated for more than a century (1847-1966) by the Église évangélique libre du canton de Vaud and its Faculty. Its aim, in the aftermath of the Second World War, was to reconsider Christianity’s role in society. Consequently, the Séminaire bolstered laypeople’s role and increased accessibility to theology.
