“All Things Bright and Beautiful”Creation Theology in 1 Timothy
Creation Theology in 1 Timothy
Abstract
Studies of the theme of creation in the New Testament and in the Pauline corpus sometimes overlook the pastoral epistles, especially Paul’s first epistle to Timothy (1 Tim.). The present study seeks to fill this gap by raising the difficult question of the profile of the author’s opponents and then by showing how this epistle proposes a certain conception of the relationship between God and creation, of life and of God as the giver of life. The final section examines in greater detail the two passages which relate to the two creation stories in Genesis (1 Tim. 2:11-15; 4:1-4). The epistle suggests various ways, ways that are in some cases quite repugnant to us today, in which believers can respect the orders of creation and thus live a good life in accordance with God’s will, imitating God’s benevolence toward God’s creation.
