André Dumas and the Figure of the Christian Intellectual

Stéphane Lavignotte

Abstract

While the figure of the Christian intellectual seems today to be struggling for legitimacy in public debates in France, there is an interest in looking at André Dumas (1918-1996). Nowadays relatively forgotten, he was one of the best known Protestant intellectuals in France during his lifetime. The gestures of his ethics in the public debate show how he passed from one intellectual figure to another: universal, official, organic, traditional, specific intellectual... Studying this mobility is a way of resuming the debates on the place and role of the intellectual, beyond the sole figure of the Christian intellectual.
