This article explores the reception of Pierre Poiret in the context of radical Pietism in Germany. In this spiritual milieu a German translation of the Divine Economy (1687) (7 vols. 1735-1742) emerged. We would like to shed some light on the realization of this project, on the people who were involved in it, and also ponder the ways in which Poiret’s text was transposed into German. Poiret and his Pietist translators shared the conviction that religious truth is only accessible through divine enlightenment. But the tension between the divine inspiration of truth and its systematic and rational arrangement in Poiret’s voluminous treatise is further reinforced by the scholarly strategies employed by the translators, in particular Johann Christoph Edelmann, who transformed himself from a radical Pietist into a representative of radical Enlightenment.
