Pierre Poiret: The Most Loyal Disciple of Antoinette Bourignon

Mirjam de Baar

Abstract

It was largely thanks to his acquaintance with the work of the female prophet Antoinette Bourignon (1616-1680) that Pierre Poiret turned from avid Cartesian into a fervent advocate of mysticism. After they met in 1676, in the subsequent years he would develop into her most dedicated acolyte and editor of her writings. However, that he would take up that role was by no means on the cards at the time of their first meeting. In fact, new research shows that for two years Bourignon kept putting Poiret to the test. The trials Bourignon subjected him to did not turn him away from her, which only goes to show how much he truly believed her to be God’s prophet. This article focuses on Bourignon’s significance for Poiret on the one hand, and on the question of his role in her afterlife on the other hand. What made him willing to spend his life in the service of Bourignon for a period of ten years?
