The role of the spiritual exercises in Michel de Certeau’s thought

Giuseppe Riggio

Abstract

This article takes into consideration two texts, on Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, which Michel de Certeau published in the French journal Christus. The analysis reveals Certeau’s interpretation of the spiritual dynamics present in the Ignatian text and points out some interesting common elements between the articles dedicated to the Spiritual Exercises and other works of Certeau. This careful reading makes it possible to better evaluate the role played by Ignatian spirituality in the elaboration of Michel de Certeau’s thought.
