A Hegelian training?

Some preliminary remarks

Abstract

In this text the author reflects on the presence and influence of Hegelian philosophy in Certeau’s work. In the post-war period, especially in the 1950s, in a very dynamic context and in a climate of profound transformations, German philosophy, and Hegel in particular, helped the Society of Jesus to open a confrontation with the human sciences in the goal of developing a language in order to decipher the challenges of the present. Following his decision to join the Company, Certeau benefited from a brief additional philosophical training during which he met, through great interpreters, Hegel’s works. Based on studies on this topic, the author articulates a reflection on the legacy, in Certeau, of this “Hegelian training”.
