Montrer l’invisible
Les dieux et leurs statues dans la céramique grecque
Abstract
This contribution examines a group of specific vases, which lead to a number of interesting questions about the status of divine image and the ways of representing gods in ancient Greece. We take into account Attic and South Italian items which show deities next to their own statues. The question that immediately arises concerns the meaning of this type of representation, which “doubles” in a certain sense the divinity. We aim at showing that the “doubling” is not redundant, as these pictures depict two different ways of presence.
