During the third War of Religion, Louis I of Bourbon, Prince of Condé, died following the defeat of his troops at the battle of Jarnac (March 13, 1569). These historical events resonated loudly in public life. On the one hand, Catholics celebrated them with joy and pride ; Protestants, on the other, paid solemn tribute to their military leader and spiritual guide. This paper examines several of the Catholic and Protestant poems in French, where the voice of Louis Dorléans’s Cantique de victoire à Dieu is notable for its distinctive nature.
