Athanase Coquerel (1795-1868), who served as pastor in Paris from 1830 until his death, was a leading representative of French Protestant liberalism in the first half of the nineteenth century. A renowned preacher whose sermons were greatly appreciated, Coquerel in 1860 published Observations pratiques sur la prédication, a work drawing directly on his pastoral experience. The present article offers a brief analysis of Coquerel’s text, in which he insists on the relative importance that doctrine and ethics — in his eyes — ought to have within Protestant preaching.
