Abstract

Reprodukt, a publisher from Berlin who initially represented a resolutely punk form of alternative comics, has managed to adapt to the particularly hostile public and to survive in the harsh German-language market. After a historic outlook on the German comics industry – first appreciated, then defiled and denounced –, a detailed portrait of Reprodukt’s editorial policy enables one to grasp the current state of German-language comics. Albeit specialized in autobiographic work at its beginnings, Reprodukt progressively published more and more fiction, in part by acquiring licensing rights from other publishers. The company attempts to stabilize its income by surfing on various commercial fads, such as the term « graphic novel » or on the popularity of manga. Sometimes, the strategy succeeds, such as when publishing comics aimed at children, which enabled Reprodukt to continue its work while others have failed to do so.
