Des tragédies pour le collège

Charles Mazouer

Abstract

Through the study of the tragedies composed by George Buchanan and Marc-Antoine Muret during their teaching periods in Bordeaux, the aim is to examine the extent to which theatre contributed to the development of feelings, the development of the mind, and the moral and religious development of pupils at the Collège de Guyenne. the re-reading of these plays shows that they had a major educational impact in shaping both the sensibilities and the reasoning abilities of the children. However, they seem to have had less influence in moral and religious matters.
