L’Épitomé des gestes des rois de France (Lyon, par Balthazar Arnoullet, 1546)
Une étape dans l’histoire de l’illustration du livre imprimé à la Renaissance
Abstract
The Épitomé des gestes des 58 roys de France published in Lyon in 1546 is a technically pioneering illustrated edition. In the kingdom of France, it is the first to be combined on a printed sheet: embossed typographic characters and intaglio illustration engravings. This study aims to examine precisely the surviving copies to shed light on the technical difficulties encountered by the printer-bookseller Balthazar Arnoullet and his workshop, which are at their origin. The latter is indeed interested in this type of technical and graphic experimentation, which is revealed by the examination of his editorial production. Similarly, the city of Lyon has stood out in this kind of experimentation for several decades. It is, let us remember, the first city to print an illustrated book in the kingdom of This study also aims to examine the follow-up that will be given to this pioneering edition.
