The settlement of Lazarists in Poland started in 1651, when the Queen of Poland, Marie Louise Gonzaga, brought the Congregation of the Mission, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul, to this country. The Lazarists deployed various activities in the domains of education and publishing, which served their central activity : their missions. These largely depended on their printed texts in the form of textbooks, catechisms and prayer books the missionaries brought from France and translated into Polish. Popular catechisms included a prayer book entitled Christian duties : what every Christian should know and do in order to be redeemed, translated from French and published in Warsaw in 1687. Responding to a growing demand at the end of the eighteenth century, the Warsaw-based publishing house of the missionary priests received a request to publish this book in Lithuanian. This is one of the elements pointing to the importance of Polish receptions of French religious texts during missionary activities of the Congregation.
