Vies parallèles. Deux diplomates bibliophiles hongrois entre Occident et Orient : François de Tott et Charles Émeric de Reviczky

Ferenc Tóth

Abstract

This article deals with two Hungarian diplomats – barons François de Tott (1733-1793) and Charles Émeric de Reviczky (1737-1793) – who served two eighteenth-century supremacies : France and Austria. Both men were experts in oriental languages, writers, and collectors of books and manuscripts. Through their libraries’ catalogues that survived at least partially, we are informed of their interests, tastes and intellectual resources. The comparison of their backgrounds, political and literary activities, as well as their bibliophilia, allow us to discover two cultured intellectuals who played an important role as intermediaries between Western and Eastern cultures.
