Dreaming is a well-known means to communicate with gods. Greek magical papyri contain a great number of receipts for personal use, which aim at obtaining divine epiphanies while sleeping. In order to have a dream, these texts suggest using plants, scents, and effects of light and darkness from lamps to affect sleep. These elements help in constructing a mise en scène for the divine epiphany, and they are thought to materialize, to give body to the dream.
