Scénographies sculptées et présence divine

Abstract

This paper considers the way in which ancient Greeks display statues of gods in cultic, votive and commemorative contexts. The detailed observation of the archaeological and epigraphic remains preserved in situ, combined with the relevant literary sources, allow us to understand that scenography gives sense to statues. The choice of location, the shapes of the statue’s base, and the type of structures erected in order to shelter statues are here examined in three successive directions: the setting of cultic statues, the colossal scale and the particular forms of statues’ bases, the display of groups that combine different kinds of statues and their insertion in a building made especially for it. These buildings, that could give ritual and sacred meanings to the statues, are also useful for their preservation.
