Come valutare il ruolo delle donne nelle tipografie lionesi nel XVI secolo

L’esempio di Denise Barbou vedova di Balthazar Arnoullet

Maria Grazia Dalai

Abstract

In this essay an attempt has been made to deepen the knowledge of Denise Barbou, widow of Balthazar Arnoullet who, in 16th century Lyon, was the protagonist, albeit for a limited period of two years, of running the typographical-publishing company familiar. This study scrutinizes the characteristics of her publishing activity which is compared with that of her husband, the published authors, the format of the books, the iconographic apparatuses and the publishers’ devices in the printed volumes. Finally, the typographical Annals were compiled and compared with those compiled by the scholars Henri Baudrier and Sybille von Gültlingen. The emerging picture, albeit limited in scope and needing further investigation, highlights not only the personal commitment of Denise Barbou but also her uncommon entrepreneurial skills.
